In preparation for Mahakumbh 2025, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has employed the Miyawaki technique to develop dense forests across the city, enhancing air quality and biodiversity for the millions of expected devotees.

The Miyawaki technique, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki in the 1970s, involves planting native tree and shrub species closely together to rapidly create dense, multilayered forests. This method accelerates plant growth, resulting in forests that are up to 30 times denser and absorb more carbon dioxide compared to traditional plantations.

Over the past two years, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has transformed approximately 56,000 square meters of land into lush green areas using this technique. Notably, in the Naini industrial area, around 120,000 trees encompassing 63 species have been planted. Additionally, a former garbage dumping yard in Baswar has been converted into a green space with 27,000 trees from 27 species.

These initiatives not only improve air quality but also offer habitats for various species, reduce pollution, prevent soil erosion, and enhance the overall ecological balance of the region.
