United Nations agencies. Antonio Guterres was on Friday re-elected as the Secretary-General of the United Nations for a second five-year term. His term will start from January 1, 2022. He was appointed as the head of the United Nations by the 193-member United Nations General Assembly.

Guterres has served as Secretary General. He was the 9th person to hold the position since 2017. He has also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015.

Prior to this, Guterres was the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002. He was voted by the Portuguese public as the best prime minister in the past 30 years in two separate elections held in 2012 and 2014.

Earlier, on June 8, a 15-member council meeting unanimously adopted a resolution recommending Guterres’ name for the post of Secretary General.
