Supreme Court has asked for the hearing of guidelines related to OTT (over the top). The Supreme Court has asked all the High Courts of the country to put a stop to hearing the cases filed by the government in this matter at present.
The Supreme Court has asked to pending hearing of other OTT (over the top) guidelines including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar. The Supreme Court has asked all the High Courts of the country to stop hearing the petition filed by the government in this matter at present. At the same time, the central government filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. In which the government claimed that there was a long-standing demand to create a mechanism to check the content of programs on OTT platforms and the content on these platforms.
The government has said in the affidavit that MPs and Chief Ministers of several states were continuously receiving complaints about the content of the OTT platform. Therefore, the Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 had to be drafted for social media platforms, OTT and digital media. The government’s affidavit came after a PIL filed by Supreme Court lawyer Shashank Shekhar Jha, who sought regulation of content in over-the-top (OTT) platforms.
