Dairy farming\u00a0<\/strong>is a major source of income for a staggering\u00a0121 million farmers<\/a>\u00a0in India, with total production touching\u00a0176 million<\/a>\u00a0metric tonnes in 2018. However, farmers are struggling to earn a livelihood due to the\u00a0unavailability of quality fodder\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0high cost of cattle feed.<\/strong>\u00a0This, in turn, has been affecting the quality of milk as well as the health of cows and buffaloes, causing a streak of\u00a0economic losses.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to a report by\u00a0Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute<\/a>\u00a0(IGFRI), India is currently facing a shortfall accounting to\u00a035.6 percent<\/strong>\u00a0for green fodder,\u00a011 percen<\/strong>t for dry crop residues fodder, and\u00a044 percent\u00a0<\/strong>for concentrate feed ingredients.<\/p>\n

In an attempt to change this scenario, 31-year-old\u00a0Nikhil Bohra<\/strong>\u00a0founded\u00a0Krimanshi<\/a>in 2015 to\u00a0convert<\/strong>\u00a0food and agricultural waste into low-cost feed<\/strong>\u00a0and fodder for dairy farmers.<\/p>\n

In the last four years, the\u00a0Jodhpur-based startup<\/strong>\u00a0has helped over\u00a0500 farmer households<\/strong>\u00a0across Rajasthan to increase milk production and reduce veterinary costs. That is not all.<\/p>\n

Krimanshi has also added value to the environment by generating value from\u00a0100 tonnes of waste<\/strong>\u00a0so far (500 to 1,000 kilograms per day)<\/p>\n

After completing his engineering in\u00a0Biotechnology<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0Vellore Institute of Technology,\u00a0<\/strong>Nikhil started working with various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across domains like sustainability, nutrition and health, and sanitation.
