The road between Rishikesh and Bhaniyawala is to be made four lane. Widening work is to be done in a radius of about 21 km at a cost of Rs 600 crore. During the widening, about 3300 trees are also in the danger of being cut. Their pruning work is going on these days. Environmentalists and people have expressed strong anger over such a large number of trees being cut.A large number of environment lovers including two Padma Shri and a folk singer took to the streets to protest against the cutting of about 3300 trees in the name of widening the Bhaniyawala-Rishikesh road. Clinging to the trees, the women pledged to protect them and announced the launch of Chipko Andolan 2.0. A signature campaign was also launched during the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are the demands of the protesters<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The Rishikesh-Jolly Grant Highway project and the felling of 3,300 trees under it should be banned.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. A complete ban should be imposed on the commercial use of forests in environmentally sensitive areas in and around Dehradun. Sustainable development should be given priority in all future projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. The traditional canals of Dehradun should be preserved and revived. These canals play an important role in groundwater recharge and controlling temperature during extreme heat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. The major rivers of Dehradun (Rispana, Bindal and Song) should be revived. They should be protected from plastic waste and untreated sewage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Strict rules should be implemented to promote green spaces. At least 25% of the land in all new residential and commercial projects coming up in Dehradun and surrounding areas should be reserved for green areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Quick action should be taken to improve air quality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. The Forest Act of 1980 should be amended and effective strategies should be adopted to prevent forest fires. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    On Sunday, people associated with various organizations gathered in the Saat Mod area. Environmentalists said that in the last few decades, environmental imbalance has increased rapidly in Dehradun and its surrounding areas. Rising temperatures, declining groundwater levels and deteriorating air quality are having a serious impact on the health and lives of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Despite these serious signs, big development projects are being carried out without any long-term environmental plan. The people of Uttarakhand have been protesting against the indiscriminate cutting of forests and destruction of natural resources for a long time. But it is not being taken seriously. The protesters tied Raksha Sutra to the trees in the Saat Mod area and pledged to protect them.
